BODY IMAGE

Our society is consumed by the pressure of having to look a certain way. The constant pressure to fit a that look has caused many individuals, especially teenagers, to go to extremes just to feel comfortable in their own skin. It is important to take a closer look into how the media perpetuates ideal body standards. The media has caused many to have a negative perception of their own body. By conducting different activities centered around body image, students will be able to recognize that there is no such thing as “the perfect body.”

By introducing students to the standards the media has created, they will learn to develop a more positive perception of their bodies. It is vital to have hands-on activities in order for them to feel the effects of trying to achieve the perfect body, as portrayed by the media: skinny and tall. The media's endorsement of this look causes individuals to feel a constant need to portray the same physique.

Many of the lessons require students to bring in their own research and images from media to analyze in class. By the end of the unit, our goal is to change the way students view what it means to be beautiful and to be confident in their own bodies.

We hope these activities, videos, and blogs help transform how the students perceive media's images in relation to their own self-esteem.
