The Power of Media
Everything in our world today seems to be tainted by the presence of media. Media has permeated into all different aspects of daily life; it conducts the hottest trends, creating new definitions of what is acceptable. It has the power to influence those in society.
This is a 20-day unit designed to encourage students to analyze that power that the media possesses over popular teenage issues, such as drugs, alcohol, and body image. We will focus on answering the question "What are the effects and peer pressures of media influences, related to drugs, alcohol, and body image?"
At the end of this unit, students will be able to demonstrate their understanding of the effects of media on teenagers in relation to drugs, alcohol and body image through final presentations. They will learn how to deconstruct the power of media and lessen its ability to affect their self-esteem, learning to identify which situations are safe and how to handle body image issues.
This unit incorporates different learning applications from other subject areas including, but not limited to, strategic communications, English, statistics, psychology, physical education, health education and sociology.
